About The Position

The Nurse Manager provides leadership, clinical practice and staff development for one nursing unit, and is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating nursing practice at the unit level. The Nurse Manager is accountable to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical and support staff, and appropriate resource and service management related to patient care. The Nurse Manager must also ensure services and care are provided abiding by the policies and procedures of the organization, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability. The Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for implementing executive strategies into frontline reality by effectively and efficiently managing and leading in area(s) of responsibility for the strategic, financial and human resource plans, performance improvement initiatives, appropriate clinical practice knowledge and technology.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Valid Florida RN license is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment.
  • Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Must have clinical knowledge, skill and ability to fully and accurately complete all required unit competencies, as indicated in the unit competency check-list.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity
  • AHA Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Nice To Haves

  • Management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Employees hired into this position before January 2006 are grandfathered in to BSN requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement nursing's strategic plan, and ensures area of responsibility is fully integrated into the overall strategic goals and objectives.

  • Assume responsibility for the continuous growth, development of employees and daily operations of unit, including strategic succession plan.

  • Formulate unit objectives, goals, and specific strategies that are consistent with those of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all providers.
  • Advocate and involve multi-disciplinary team when major changes are planned, utilizing shared governance model to communicate information.
  • Take the lead in working with the Labor Management Partnership team in developing staffing efficiencies, service excellence, employee satisfaction and continuous improvement in quality outcomes.
  • Function as a role model to promote the Mission, Vision, philosophy, code of ethics and CARE values of the organization.
  • Ensure that the performance improvement program is interdisciplinary and aligned with that of the organization.
  • Cultivate and sustain a culture of innovation, continual learning and accountability.
  • Partner with other disciplines to drive and sustain positive change within the unit(s).
  • Attend leadership classes offered by the leadership development team.
  • Collaborate to improve quality metrics using established process improvement technologies.
  • Facilitate change and foster staff engagement involvement.
  • Promote staff participation in shared governance Council and unit-level decision making.
  • Perform relevant cost-benefit and other impact analysis, using financial models, flowcharting and other quantitative methods.
  • Monitor and manage unit finances and productivity.
  • Justify monthly variances.
  • Understand and maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements and JHS policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and demonstrate current knowledge of trends in the administration of healthcare as it relates to nursing practice and the provisions of quality care.
  • Design and implement flexible staffing models that assure the provision of adequate staff to care for patients while meeting unit targets.
  • Provide a professional environment that is physically, emotionally and psychologically safe for nurses.
  • Follow and perform all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
  • Utilize job and unit specific equipment as required.
  • Perform all other related job duties as assigned.
