About The Position

The Surgical-Medical Pediatric Critical Care Unit (W4) is a 44-bed multispecialty intensive care unit. Nurses on this unit care for patients requiring intensive airway management and physiologic monitoring, including those recovering from neuro-surgical procedures, trauma, solid organ transplant, and other surgical procedures. The unit also cares for a variety of medical patients, including those with chronic needs and tracheotomies requiring extensive discharge teaching. Due to the nature of the patients, there is a high volume of admission, discharge, and transfer activity. Nurses on West 4 are skilled in various competencies, including neurological dysfunction, solid organ transplantation, dialysis, respiratory ailments, and surgical/trauma needs. The patient population may also include those with respiratory illness, sepsis, or bone marrow transplant or oncology patients requiring intensive medical and nursing management. The intern will perform nursing tasks under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, for which they have been trained and demonstrated competency. This is a casual position that does not include benefits.

Requirements

Senior level status in any nursing program required.
Ability to communicate and understand detailed instructions relating to basic patient care and transport.
Must be able to work and stand for long periods.
Must be able to lift and position patients weighing up to 75 pounds.
BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council
Must be able to commit to one 12-hour shift per week (days or nights depending on school schedule) while in school.
Must attend a New Team Member Welcome session on the start date (Mondays) if hired as a new hire, making alternate arrangements with faculty if necessary.

Nice To Haves

Prefer May 2027 grads who are passionate about the surgical medical PICU and intend to pursue a future RN promotion there.
Prefer candidates with hospital cna or tech experience.

Responsibilities

Performs nursing tasks for which he/she has been trained and has demonstrated competency through a skills checklist, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Cares for the immediate postoperative needs of patients requiring intensive airway management and physiologic monitoring.
Cares for a variety of medical patients, including chronic needs patients and patients with tracheotomies requiring extensive teaching for discharge.
Assists with a high volume of admission, discharge, and transfer activity.
Provides care for patients with neurological dysfunction, solid organ transplantation, dialysis, respiratory ailments, surgical/trauma needs, chronic conditions, respiratory illness, sepsis, bone marrow transplant, or oncology patients.
