Inpatient Oncology nurses provide direct bedside care to hospitalized patients receiving cancer treatment or managing complications related to their disease or therapy. Their work focuses on continuous assessment, medication administration, symptom management, and rapid response to clinical deterioration in an acute care setting. As complexity increases, inpatient oncology nurses manage high‑risk regimens, unstable conditions, and oncologic emergencies, coordinating closely with the interdisciplinary team. Advanced practice within this subfamily reflects increasing clinical judgment, autonomy, and leadership at the bedside across highly complex inpatient populations.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine assessments for inpatient oncology patients; identifies changes and escalates concerns per protocol.
  • Provides direct care for stable oncology patients following established treatment plans.
  • Administers medications and treatments, including chemotherapy, under supervision.
  • Recognizes common treatment-related side effects and reports abnormalities.
  • Supports patients participating in clinical trials under guidance.
  • Provides basic patient and family education on treatment and symptom management.
  • Coordinates care activities with providers and team members; seeks guidance when needed.
  • Maintains accurate documentation in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Maintains a safe environment by adhering to oncology safety protocols.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary communication, including rounds and handoffs.
