The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed nursing student role for students enrolled in an accredited nursing program who are within one year of graduation. Under the direct supervision of a licensed professional registered nurse, the extern expands their clinical experience through competency assessment and a wide range of patient-care activities, including classroom training, participating in care planning and implementation, observing and evaluating care, and identifying and reporting significant observations. The extern may perform only skills for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction and demonstrated competency under direct RN supervision; no skills may be performed independently. The position is in the Hematology-Oncology PCU/IMC unit, a 29-bed unit caring for adults with cancer. The unit provides stem-cell transplants and CAR-T therapies and offers opportunities to learn about cancer care, chemotherapy administration, blood products, and stem-cell transplants. The work includes collaborating with other disciplines, following safety and compliance standards, and communicating patient information to the supervising nurse and other health-care providers. The role is not permanent; employment is subject to the criteria in the Nurse Program policy. The program’s goal is for externs to continue on their selected unit as a new graduate after graduation and RN licensure.
