Nurse Extern- Medical Oncology
About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The position supports patient recovery, health, and wellness through delegated basic nursing skills, personal care assistance, safe care delivery, and administrative tasks. The extern maintains necessary skills and competencies and may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned. This is an eight-week program beginning June 14, 2027, and ending August 7, 2027. Following orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be flexible to work days or nights to match their preceptor’s schedule. The stated base compensation is $17.28 per hour, not including any applicable incentive compensation programs.
Requirements
- Must be a nursing student entering their final year, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
- BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
- Must be flexible to work day or night shifts to match the schedule of the assigned preceptor.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal care as needed to support optimal recovery during hospitalization.
- Perform basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
- Perform administrative support functions.
- Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
