About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, helps maintain a safe care environment, and maintains necessary skills and competencies.

This eight-week program runs from June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. Following orientation, externs work 36–40 hours per week in three 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be flexible to work day or night shifts to match their preceptor’s schedule. The position pays $17.28 per hour; eligible positions may also have incentive compensation such as shift differentials.

The role is intended for nursing students entering their final year, with expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028. Students may remain employed as Nurse Externs until graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process to continue employment.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in nursing school and entering the final year, with expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028.
• BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
• Flexibility to work day or night shifts to match the preceptor’s schedule.
• Ability to work 36–40 hours per week in three 12-hour shifts following orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with personal care as needed to support recovery during hospitalization.
• Perform basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
• Perform administrative support functions.
• Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
