Nurse Extern- Med/Surg
About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions in an inpatient or outpatient setting under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policy and procedures, supports a safe care environment, performs administrative tasks, and maintains required skills and competencies. This is an eight-week summer program running June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. Following orientation, externs work three 12-hour shifts per week, totaling 36–40 hours. Candidates must be flexible to work days or nights to match their preceptor’s schedule. The base compensation is $17.28 per hour. The position is for nursing students entering their final year of school, with expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028. Students may remain employed as Nurse Externs until graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process to continue employment.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a nursing program and entering the final year, with graduation expected between December 2027 and May 2028.
- BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
- Must be flexible to work day or night shifts to match the preceptor’s schedule.
- No prior experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal care as needed to support recovery during hospitalization.
- Perform basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
- Perform administrative support functions.
- Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
- Work with team members to develop or improve processes that support a remarkable patient experience and improved patient outcomes.
- Coordinate patient care through delegation, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills.
- Partner with patients and families to resolve concerns related to healthcare delivery.
- Communicate timely progress updates to team members and use communication tools to support quality decisions.
- Support care that is consistent with The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
