About The Position

The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed staff member who supports licensed professional staff in providing care and service to patients and families. Under the direct supervision of a registered nursing professional, the Nurse Extern performs basic to intermediate nursing care activities that contribute to patient comfort and safety and supports the plan of care for assigned patients. The role works directly with a nursing preceptor and assists in managing the preceptor’s patient load.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must have completed Nursing Fundamentals and be actively enrolled in a BSN program.
• Less than one year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, provide vital signs, AM/PM care, intake and output measurement, tube feedings, simple dressing changes, post-mortem care, pin care, ostomy care, discontinue indwelling urinary catheters, and collect urine.
• Under supervision, perform phlebotomy, capillary blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, and finger and heel sticks as required by a registered nurse.
• Depending on the nursing unit and under supervision, perform tracheostomy care, discontinue peripheral intravenous lines, and provide in-line suctioning for ventilator patients.
• Ensure laboratory specimens are properly labeled and promptly delivered to the appropriate departments.
• Assist in coordinating unit activities so patients’ needs are met efficiently.
• Serve as a runner between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray.
• Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations.
• Report pertinent patient and family information to the appropriate nurse to provide input into the plan of care.
• Transport patients safely to ancillary departments and use hand-off communications.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
