The Summer Nurse Extern Program at Aurora Mount Pleasant offers a unique opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a Medical-Surgical unit. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, externs will participate in patient care activities, including assisting with daily living, monitoring vital signs, and blood glucose levels. The program emphasizes collaboration with the RN in developing and evaluating care plans, and developing delegation skills. Externs will also administer medications as delegated by the RN, manage an increased patient load, and practice time management. The role requires the ability to collect and synthesize patient data, respond to emergencies under supervision, and perform patient positioning and transport duties. This program is designed for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program who have successfully completed a Medical Surgical Clinical and a Pharmacological Concepts course. The program runs for 6-8 weeks starting in early June, requiring a commitment of 36-40 hours per week. Competitive wages are offered, but the program does not provide benefits. Shifts may vary, including Days, PMs, and NOCs.
