About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe environment and safe care delivery, performs administrative support functions, and maintains required skills and competencies. This is an eight-week program running June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. After orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. The posted schedule is nights, 7 p.m.–7 a.m., with rotating weekends. Nurse Externs may remain employed in the role until graduation. Following graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process to continue employment.
Requirements
- Be a nursing student entering the final year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
- BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
