About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe care environment, and maintains required skills and competencies.

This is an eight-week program running June 14 through August 7, 2027. Following orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. The posted schedule is nights, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with rotating weekends. The base compensation is $17.28 per hour; applicable incentive compensation, such as shift differentials, may also be available to eligible positions.

Applicants must be nursing students entering their final year, with expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028. BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year. Students may remain employed as Nurse Externs until graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process.
