About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions in an inpatient or outpatient setting under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe care environment, and maintains required skills and competencies.

This eight-week program runs from June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. After orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week over three 12-hour shifts, on nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with rotating weekends. The base compensation is $17.28 per hour; applicable shift differentials and other incentive programs may be available for eligible positions.

Applicants must be nursing students entering their final year, with a graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028. BSN students must have completed their third year, and ASN students must have completed their first year. Externs may remain employed until graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.

Requirements

• Be a currently enrolled nursing student entering the last year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
• BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
• No prior experience is required.
• Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 20 pounds occasionally, and having communicative, auditory, visual, and attention-to-detail skills.
