About The Position

The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed staff member who supports licensed professional staff in providing care and service to patients and families. Under the direct supervision of a registered nursing professional, the Nurse Extern performs basic to intermediate nursing care activities that contribute to patient comfort and safety, supports the care plan for assigned patients, and works with a nursing preceptor to help manage the preceptor’s patient load.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must have completed Nursing Fundamentals.
• Must be actively enrolled in a BSN program.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, perform vital signs, AM/PM care, intake and output measurement, tube feedings, simple dressing changes, post-mortem care, pin care for orthopedic patients, ostomy care, discontinuation of indwelling urinary catheters, and urine collection.
• Under supervision, perform phlebotomy, capillary blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, and finger and heel sticks as required by a registered nurse.
• Depending on the nursing unit and under supervision, perform tracheostomy care, discontinue peripheral intravenous lines, and provide in-line suctioning of ventilator patients.
• Ensure laboratory specimens are properly labeled and promptly delivered to the appropriate departments.
• Assist in coordinating unit activities so patients’ needs are met efficiently.
• Serve as a runner between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray.
• Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations.
• Report pertinent patient and family information to the appropriate nurse and provide input into the plan of care.
• Safely transport patients to ancillary departments using hand-off communications.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
