About The Position

Samaritan is seeking a Nurse Educator to plan, develop, coordinate, and deliver orientation and educational information to new and existing nursing staff. This role will also facilitate and teach certification classes for Healthcare Providers (ACLS, ACLS-OB, PALS, NRP, TNCC, and ENPC). The individual must understand the purpose and operation of Nurse Education and be able to make sound judgments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required
  • Current Washington State RN Licensure.
  • HCP (Healthcare Provider) Level of BLS (Basic Life Support) within 30 days of hire – AHA or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years nursing experience in acute care within the previous 7 years.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in conducting nursing education.
  • Demonstrates competent, current, general nursing skills.
  • Possesses working knowledge of training methodologies and practices, such as adult learning principles, needs analysis, and skills assessment.
  • Demonstrates competent training skills in a variety of settings, including classroom, one-on-one tutoring, on-the-job mentoring and instruction, etc.
  • Conceives and structures training programs and develops training materials for classroom and other forms of delivery.
  • Coordinates educational events efficiently and effectively.
  • Possesses communication skills (written, spoken and listening).
  • Demonstrates positive professional interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of software programs, such as Word and PowerPoint, and able to learn and use new software programs.
  • Organizes workload and manage systems to meet task requirements and deadlines.

  • CPR and ACLS/PALS instructor status preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, maintains and conducts general orientation for new members of the nursing staff.
  • Plans, develops, maintains and conducts the nurse residency program for newly graduated nurses.
  • Assists nursing directors as needed in the development of structure and content for unit orientations.
  • Coordinates and helps teach programs such as ACLS, ACLS-OB, TNCC, NRP, ENPC, and PALS, annually, ensures current evidence based practice is followed as mandated, and associated document is complete.
  • Plans, develops and conducts nursing skills training, as needed, using a variety of delivery methods, including classroom, one-on-one tutoring, on-the-job mentoring and instruction, self-study materials, on-line resources, and computer-based learning.
  • Determines need and methods for testing; develops and administers both written and performance tests; and assesses test results to evaluate outcome and skill gaps.
  • Participates as a member of the PCS Education Taskforce meeting with the Nurse Directors and the QI/Risk Management Director as needed to identify, develop, and deliver education for staff development.
  • Supports nursing directors as needed in implementing improvement plans for nursing staff members with skill deficiencies.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates and conducts other nursing and patient related educational programs as assigned. Identifies and evaluates instructional materials in all types of media and formats. Reviews, evaluates, and writes training content, procedures, and assessments.
  • Estimates, tracks and controls budgetary needs for educational programs within area of responsibility, and monitors costs to determine appropriate registration fees.
  • Keeps abreast of current nursing practice by observing in each nursing department a minimum of once per month. Also keeps current with internal changes in nursing policies, procedures and practices through review of revised documents and maintaining a reasonable clinical schedule. Collaborates with Informatics, Quality, and other departments as needed to ensure current practice is reflected in education.
  • Serves as educational consultant to facilities, taskforces, committees, and projects relating to policy, procedure, and program development, and completes associated tasks as assigned. Facilitates/teaches orientation classes for nursing students before their clinical rotations at Samaritan Healthcare.
  • Facilitates/teaches classes for Pre-Op Joint Replacement patients.
  • May assist Employee Health in the provision of vaccinations to staff.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.
