This position is responsible and accountable for assessing, planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating staff development and educational activities designed to address identified or anticipated needs of learners for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Acute Care Unit. The role assures the quality of patient care and clinical practice progression on assigned cross-campus unit(s) through the assessment, coaching, and development of nursing staff and collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. This includes all aspects of clinical practice, patient care, workplace safety, and the outcomes of care patients receive. The specialist participates in the development and implementation of educational programs for Pediatric Nursing, including Oncology. In the area of Clinical Practice & Patient Experience, the specialist is responsible for communicating, educating, and monitoring changes to clinical practice and expectations, including reviewing documentation, providing additional support to staff, and reporting ongoing non-compliance to management. They collaborate with the leadership team in the strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of systems to support and enhance the competence, autonomy, and accountability of the nursing staff, including defining nursing standards, practices, and educational needs. As a member of the nursing leadership team, the specialist participates in interview panels, orientation, and annual regulatory and clinical competency requirements. They report unprofessional or unsafe practice to the Nurse Manager and assist the Manager or designee in ensuring department compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures. In Quality, Safety, and Experience Improvements, the specialist promotes a culture of safety within the organization, reports on all entered Safety Intelligence Reports, and is responsible for the initial review and investigation of serious reportable events (SREs), escalating them immediately to the Nurse Manager.
