About The Position

This position requires a competent clinician with knowledge, skill, and experience in a specialty area. The Nurse Clinician III functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, with predominantly interdependent decision-making. Practice is problem-focused and patient-centered, capable of managing unexpected or emergency situations common in the assigned specialty population. This role serves as a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II, managing common contingency situations on the clinical unit. Patient care is provided based on the American Nurses Association Standards of Professional Practice and Professional Performance, valuing specialty unit, nursing, and institutional strategic initiatives and health system goals.

Requirements

  • RN with two years of clinical RN experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a current license or valid permit to practice in Texas.
  • Current BLS required.
  • RN license.
  • BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents the daily care of assigned patients.
  • Identifies nursing diagnoses/patient care needs and develops/revises care plans.
  • Executes physician's orders, administers medications and treatments, and delivers competent nursing care in accordance with UTMB's policies and standards.
  • Performs routine technical procedures/skills in the assigned specialty area.
  • Provides basic patient/family instruction and healthcare teaching based on identified learning needs.
  • Identifies potential impact of family dynamics and utilizes evidence-based resources for patient/family education.
  • Uses Teach-Back to determine effectiveness and modifies strategies as needed.
  • Plans, coordinates, and prioritizes patient care activities.
  • Maintains safety and continuity of care using methods such as bedside shift report and inter-disciplinary rounding.
  • Demonstrates effective time management skills and delegates appropriately.
  • Demonstrates competent use of technology in patient care delivery.
  • Identifies ethical situations and seeks assistance to resolve them.
  • Delivers culturally sensitive care using resources to meet patient/family needs.
  • Serves as a patient advocate, seeking guidance when necessary.
  • Supports a healthy work environment through respectful communication.
  • Recognizes colleagues who demonstrate UTMB’s core values.
  • Plans, coordinates, and prioritizes patient care activities in collaboration with the inter-professional team.

  • Participates in one journal club annually.
  • Completes the UTMB/Vizient™ Nurse Residency Program and an evidence-based practice project.

  • Identifies patient safety concerns and reports appropriately.
  • Identifies unit quality metrics/outcomes data and improvement activities.

  • Completes required specialty-specific Competency Based Orientation (CBO) tools.
  • Actively participates in ongoing self-evaluation of competency.
  • Completes the annual self-evaluation on time.
  • Performs and reports point of care testing (POCT).
  • Prioritizes and organizes work to complete assignments within a specified time frame.
  • Provides and maintains a clean, safe environment and performs aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
  • Practices basic cost containment for patients and the unit.
  • Consistently completes accurate, concise, and legible documentation.
  • Competently utilizes electronic forms of communication and documentation.
  • Meets periodic UTMB and unit-specific compliance requirements.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
