About The Position

The Public Health Nurse (PHN), as an integral member of the Public Health Services team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model and Primary Health Care. This employee works relatively independently and is expected to make primary decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, both regional and PHN specific policies and procedures, the CRNS Standards of Practice, the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses, the Community Health Nurses of Canada - Standards of Practice, and the PHN Discipline Specific Competencies. Knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotions, prevention and protection are inherent in this role. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, and other sectors and community groups.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years experience as a Public Health Nurse
  • Experience in public health and implementation of The Public Health Act, 1994
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
  • Knowledge of research and statistical collection concepts
  • Knowledge in population health promotion approaches and community development
  • Knowledge in community development
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation
  • Ability to meet multiple demands, manage complex clinical issues and workload.
  • Ability to communicate in a cross-cultural setting
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at various stages according to priorities.
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to work independently and as a leader of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to make decisions, which must include coordination of staffing
  • Ability to make decisions on patient care and coordination of equipment
  • Knowledge of communicable disease control practices and procedures
  • Basic - Organizational skills
  • Intermediate - Leadership skills
  • Basic - Facilitation skills
  • Intermediate - Computer skills
  • Communication skills to provide/obtain verbal and/or written opinions/advice
