About The Position

The Public Health Nurse translates knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health-enhancing behaviors of individuals, families and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy. Inherent in this role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, prevention, and protection. This employee focuses on the immunization program for adults, high risk individuals and international travelers and works relatively independently. This employee is expected to make decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program and the Health Region, the CRNS Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, and other relevant legislation. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, other sectors and community groups. The Public Health Nurse works within guidelines established by Health Region policy to plan, organize, implement and evaluate nursing programs in an assigned area, under the direction and supervision of a Public Health Nursing supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Facilitation skills
  • Minimum of two (2) years recent relevant experience in public health nursing
  • Experience delivering a diverse range of immunizations
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.
  • Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated high degree of accuracy is required of assigned responsibility
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate level of professional conduct and judgement.
  • Identifies the importance of culture on health.
  • Ability to analyze health issues in the context of political & social climate
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large.
  • Demonstrates skill in group education, individual counselling and advocacy
  • Demonstrated knowledge in educational resource development.
  • Able to assist all levels of clients to take responsibility for their own health
  • Evaluates nursing interventions in individual, group and community outcomes.
  • High level of accuracy in health assessment, nursing diagnosis and treatment.
  • Uses knowledge of determinants of health in interactions with clients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to be self-directed
  • Ability to exercise independent decision making in a community-based environment
  • Uses independent judgment based on Public Health principles.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in community development/assessment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs.
  • Demonstrates application of the nursing process
  • Demonstrated knowledge in media communication and social marketing.
  • Knowledge of prevention used in promotion, prevention and protection of health.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple health promotion strategies
  • Public Health Nursing courses

  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)

Responsibilities
