About The Position

The Community Mental Health Nurse (CMHN), reporting to the Manager of Mental Health & Addiction Services, is an essential element in a comprehensive Mental Health Service. The CMHN has extensive knowledge of the evidence based principles and practices of Community Health Nursing. A large portion of the CMHN's work is based outside of the clinic working independently. Each skilled CMHN is expected to monitor and administer medication, assess clinical status, provide case management, develop behavioral treatment programs, provide coverage for other recovery services team members, provide counselling and education and provide various forms of psychotherapy, including individual, family and group therapy. A CMHN provides health promotion, education and early intervention/prevention to the communities they work in. This position works in an integrated manner with other mental health and addiction programs.

Requirements

  • 2 years of recent RN/RPN experience in acute psychiatric or community psychiatry
  • Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN)
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
  • Registered/eligible with College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of SK - CRPNS
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Ability to travel when required
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Access)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide relevant educational services
  • Knowledge in principles, programs and practices in community mental health care
  • Proven ability to cope well with sustained work related emotional pressure
  • Ability to plan/organize/coordinate with other multidisciplinary team members
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Mental Health Services Act/related legislation
  • Ability to adapt to ever changing environments
  • Ability to utilize evidence-based practice
  • Ability to communicate client assessments and articulate outcomes
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs
  • Knowledge in the area of management of complex clients and psychogeriatric
  • Development & compliance of clinical standards in community mental health setting
  • Ability to develop and deliver formal education programs
  • Ability to prioritize and be flexible
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to implement a specialized therapeutic program and consultative services
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the area of recovery model
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing clinical standards of practice
  • Ability to exercise independent nursing judgement
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the area of psychopharmacology
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the area of psychosocial rehabilitation
