About The Position

The University of Vermont Medical Center Nurse Assistant Trainee program prepares eligible candidates to provide direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The five-week course is approximately 196 hours and combines classroom instruction, lab work, and clinical practice in an acute medical/surgical setting. Classes run Monday through Friday, with a schedule provided on the first day. A mandatory four-hour skill practice session is scheduled before the state licensing test. The initial training period is a full-time commitment, typically around 40 hours per week, with daytime classes. After successfully completing the course and the state-run LNA exam, trainees receive licensure through the State of Vermont and begin work on their assigned unit. Work after licensure may be full-time, part-time, or per diem, and shifts vary. A one-year commitment to the assigned unit is required after program completion. The trainee salary is $21.22 per hour; after obtaining an LNA license, the salary increases to $22.93 per hour. This is a bargaining union position. The program is open to applicants with or without a medical background, including students in nursing, health sciences, or related fields. ESL learners may receive access to the ReadyCNA Companion Course for up to 12 weeks, up to eight group classes available 24/7, and unlimited access to the EnGen course catalogue. The role is based at the University of Vermont Medical Center’s main campus in Burlington, Vermont.
