The Nurse Anesthetist collaborates with the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and healthcare team in providing comprehensive pre-procedure evaluation and initiates appropriate diagnostic procedures and physician referrals. This role involves pre-anesthesia evaluation and preparation, administration of general and regional anesthesia and all levels of sedation techniques, and post-anesthesia care for children, adolescent, and adult patients. The Nurse Anesthetist will select, obtain, order, and administer pre-anesthetic medications or treatment related to patient care and seek consultation when appropriate. They will conduct appropriate physical screening assessments, obtain health histories, and document pre-anesthetic evaluations to secure informed consent for anesthesia and related services. Additionally, they will recommend, request, and evaluate pertinent diagnostic studies, manage emergency situations including CPR, and provide consultation and implementation of respiratory and ventilator care. The role also includes managing interventional pain therapy, performing arterial punctures, and managing airway management including fiberoptic intubation. The Nurse Anesthetist will perform and manage regional anesthetic techniques, provide invasive and non-invasive monitoring, recognize and manage abnormal patient responses during anesthesia, and discharge patients from post-anesthesia care areas according to policy. They will also initiate and administer pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system and respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post-anesthesia period, and provide post-anesthesia follow-up.
