The Nurse Anesthetist collaborates with the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and healthcare team in providing comprehensive pre-procedure evaluations and initiating appropriate diagnostic procedures and physician referrals. This role involves pre-anesthesia evaluation and preparation, administration of general and regional anesthesia and all levels of sedation techniques, and post-anesthesia care for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients. The Nurse Anesthetist selects, obtains, orders, and administers pre-anesthetic medications or treatments, seeks consultation when appropriate, and conducts physical screening assessments to obtain health histories and document pre-anesthetic evaluations for informed consent. They recommend, request, and evaluate diagnostic studies, and manage emergency situations including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The role also includes managing interventional pain therapy, performing arterial punctures, providing respiratory and ventilator care, and managing anesthetic agents, fluids, and blood products. Evaluation of patient response during emergence from anesthesia, ensuring patient stability during transfer, and preparing and managing all necessary equipment, monitors, supplies, and drugs are key responsibilities. The Nurse Anesthetist performs all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation, and manages various regional anesthetic techniques. They provide appropriate invasive and non-invasive monitoring, recognize and address abnormal patient responses during anesthesia, and discharge patients from post-anesthesia care areas according to policy. Additionally, they initiate and administer pharmacological or fluid support for the cardiovascular system, provide respiratory support, and conduct post-anesthesia follow-up evaluations.
