Nuclear Safety Integration Lead

Aalo Atomics•Idaho Falls, ID
•Onsite

About The Position

Aalo Atomics is seeking a Nuclear Safety Integration Lead to coordinate and integrate technical inputs for developing and defending its DOE safety basis and Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis (PDSA). Reporting to the Nuclear Safety Manager, the role is an integration point among the DOE authorization team, Risk and Reliability, thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, design, and other contributing engineering teams. The lead ensures safety requirements are understood, responsibilities are clear, and analyses support a consistent, defensible safety case. The position works with the DOE authorization lead and technical teams to translate regulatory requirements into engineering work, identify integration issues early, and ensure that the PDSA and related safety documentation are technically sound. It coordinates planning, preparation, review, integration, and defense of safety-basis materials; manages interfaces, assumptions, deliverables, and open items; and supports DOE regulatory interactions, readiness assessments, and authorization milestones. The role is based at the Aalo-X campus in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and combines office and field work. It includes periodic visits to operating nuclear facility areas using appropriate PPE and access controls, and occasional travel to DOE headquarters, other Aalo locations, or industry events. Applicants must be based in the United States, willing to work on-site in Idaho Falls, and be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Persons in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810 who do not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • At least 8 years of experience in nuclear safety analysis, safety-basis development, or technical integration at DOE nuclear facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multidisciplinary technical inputs into DOE safety-basis documents such as DSAs, PDSAs, or equivalent.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOE safety-basis requirements, including 10 CFR 830 and DOE-STD-3009.
  • Experience translating regulatory requirements into specific engineering analysis and documentation needs.
  • Familiarity with probabilistic risk assessment, deterministic safety analysis, and dose-consequence methodologies as applied to nuclear facility safety cases.
  • Experience coordinating with DOE on analytical methods, codes, and assumptions for safety-basis applications.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to present complex, multidisciplinary safety arguments clearly and concisely.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent technical deliverables and drive cross-functional teams toward integrated outcomes.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive working relationships across engineering, operations, and regulatory teams.
  • Based in the United States and willing to work on-site in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810 and may not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Experience with thermal-hydraulic, neutronic, or fuel performance analysis codes used in DOE safety-basis applications.
  • Direct experience preparing or defending a PDSA or DSA for a new or modified DOE nuclear facility.
  • Familiarity with hazard analysis methodologies, including process hazard analyses and bounding accident analyses for nuclear facilities.
  • Experience supporting DOE readiness assessments, Operational Readiness Reviews, or Federal Readiness Assessments.
  • Background in advanced reactor technologies, microreactors, or first-of-a-kind nuclear facility design and authorization.
  • Experience managing configuration control of complex technical documents with inputs from multiple organizations.
  • Familiarity with Integrated Safety Management System principles and their application to safety-basis development.
  • Experience interacting with external oversight bodies such as the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
  • Project management or technical program management experience in a nuclear or defense environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an integrated PDSA content, requirements, and responsibility plan defining scope, ownership, interfaces, and delivery milestones for contributing technical teams.
  • Coordinate preparation, integration, internal review, and technical defense of the PDSA and related DOE safety documentation with the DOE authorization lead and responsible technical teams.
  • Translate DOE safety-basis requirements and standards into specific analysis, report, and data needs, including interfaces and dependencies.
  • Identify analytical methods, codes, and assumptions requiring DOE alignment, and coordinate engagement with DOE through the DOE authorization lead to confirm their suitability for safety-basis applications.
  • Integrate inputs from Risk and Reliability, including PRA, deterministic safety analysis, dose consequences, thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, fuel performance, hazards analysis, and supporting engineering information.
  • Identify gaps, inconsistent assumptions, missing interfaces, and unresolved technical questions that could affect the PDSA, DOE authorization, design, resources, or schedule, and communicate them to decision-makers.
  • Establish a process for providing safety and risk feedback to design teams and tracking the resolution of safety-related design questions.
  • Define how safety inputs are communicated to design teams, document their disposition, maintain traceability to affected analyses and requirements, and confirm closure with responsible teams.
  • Facilitate technical integration meetings and working sessions to resolve cross-discipline analytical interfaces, assumptions, and dependencies.
  • Track PDSA deliverables, technical inputs, and open items across teams, escalating schedule or quality risks as appropriate.
  • Support responses to DOE requests for additional information, safety evaluation reports, and other safety-basis regulatory interactions.
  • Coordinate with the nuclear safety team to ensure consistency between the PDSA and other safety-basis documents, including hazard analyses, TSRs, and USQ evaluations.
  • Maintain configuration management of integrated PDSA content, including version control and traceability of technical inputs and assumptions.
  • Support DOE readiness assessments and authorization milestones by ensuring the integrated safety case is complete and defensible.
