About The Position

Join our team to help meet current and future challenges to build the clean energy world of tomorrow. By joining the Orano Group, you will be a part of a leading international player in the nuclear industry. Our strengths? Across the entire fuel cycle, we have extensive expertise in cutting-edge technologies, safe, high value-added products and services, and a strong capacity for innovation. Step into a career-defining opportunity with Orano USA, a global leader in nuclear innovation, as we launch Project IKE—a cutting-edge uranium enrichment facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Orano is seeking a Nuclear Safety/Integrated Safety Analysis Engineer to support Project IKE. The Nuclear Safety/ISA Engineer is responsible for the development and implementation of the Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA), including Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS), as well as oversight of the criticality, chemical process, fire safety strategies, and detailed design for nuclear safety to ensure compliance with the license documents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Safety Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Physics, or a closely related engineering or physical-science discipline from an accredited program.
  • Must have 4 to 15 years of progressive professional experience in nuclear safety analysis, safety-basis development, or safety engineering at a nuclear facility (fuel cycle, enrichment, conversion/deconversion, DOE nuclear facility, or commercial power).
  • Demonstrated ownership of ISA, Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), or equivalent safety-basis products under 10 CFR 70, 10 CFR 830, or comparable regulatory frameworks.
  • Must be eligible for a DOE security clearance and maintain eligibility throughout employment.
  • Deep working knowledge of nuclear facility safety-basis methods: hazard analysis, accident analysis, defense-in-depth, and control hierarchy.
  • Ability to read P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical one-lines, and mechanical/HVAC design packages and translate them into safety sequences and IROFS.
  • Precise technical writing; produces documents that withstand independent and regulatory review.
  • Comfortable briefing executives and regulators; can defend assumptions, uncertainty, and conservatism without overpromising.
  • Collaborative but willing to hold a safety line when design or schedule pressure conflicts with adequate protection.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard document-control systems; experience with PHA software or consequence codes is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is advantageous but not required.
  • Direct experience at a 10 CFR Part 70 fuel-cycle or uranium enrichment facility (e.g., ISA development, IROFS management measures, NRC inspection support).
  • Experience supporting NRC license applications, RAIs, or construction/operational readiness for a new or major-modified nuclear facility.
  • Working knowledge of UF6 chemistry/hazards, centrifuge or other enrichment process technology, and associated fire, criticality, and toxic-release scenarios.
  • Familiarity with DOE-STD-3009, NUREG-1520, ANSI/ANS nuclear criticality standards, NFPA nuclear fire-protection guidance, and natural-phenomena design criteria.
  • Prior interface with NRC Region II, NMSS, or equivalent regulatory staff.
  • Leadership of multi-disciplined safety reviews or independent safety review committees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, update, and configuration control of the facility Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA), ISA Summary, and supporting safety-basis documentation consistent with 10 CFR 70 Subpart H, NUREG-1520, and applicable NRC guidance.
  • Perform and independently review hazard identification, process hazard analysis (HAZOP, HAZID, What-If, FMEA), accident sequence evaluation, and consequence/likelihood assessments for enrichment process systems, UF6 handling, cascading, support utilities, and construction/commissioning activities.
  • Identify Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS), define functional requirements, management measures, and performance criteria; support reliability, availability, and maintainability of safety controls.
  • Prepare and review Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) / change evaluations, major modification determinations, and 10 CFR 70.72 change-process packages.
  • Support NRC license application, RAIs, inspections, and operational readiness; brief federal counterparts on the scope of hazards analyzed and the credited safety controls.
  • Evaluate design packages, vendor documents, procedures, and field changes for impact on the safety basis; provide safety-in-design challenge to mechanical, process, I&C, civil/structural, and fire-protection disciplines.
  • Integrate nuclear criticality safety, chemical/toxicological consequence, fire protection, natural phenomena hazards, and human-performance considerations into a coherent facility safety case.
  • Investigate operational events, near misses, and new technical information; recommend corrective actions and safety-basis updates.
  • Author clear, defensible technical reports and present findings to project leadership, independent reviewers, and regulators.
  • Mentor Safety Engineers and analysts; establish analysis standards, templates, and review practices for a first-of-a-kind commercial enrichment facility.
  • Support emergency planning, fire-safety licensing interfaces, and readiness reviews as assigned.
