About The Position

Performs routine to moderately complex Nuclear Medicine examination procedures utilizing SPECT, SPECT/CT and PET/CT. This role requires knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations, medical sciences related to human anatomy and physiology, radioactive materials handling, and radiation safety practices. The technologist is responsible for the quality and quantity of exams performed, minimizing patient dosage, and ensuring patient understanding of procedures and potential hazards. The role may also involve monitoring vital signs, recognizing allergic reactions, initiating CPR, maintaining cleanliness and supplies, reporting equipment malfunctions, and working cooperatively with colleagues to support organizational missions.

Requirements

• NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification
• BLS (American Heart Association, American Red Cross or Military Training Network) certification
• Knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations pertaining to nuclear medicine technology practices.
• Knowledge of medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and physics as they relate to the cardiovascular, skeletal, endocrine, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems.
• Knowledge of radioactive package types, package surveys, and radioactive materials record management.
• Ability to document excessive radiation exposure in the working environment.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing post iodine-131 radiation safety precautions.
• Ability to troubleshoot gamma camera and auxiliary equipment problems.
• Ability to analyze computer-generated data for technical quality and artifacts and initiate corrective measures.
• Knowledge of medical events requiring documentation and the ability to properly document them and make recommendations to the radiation safety officer (RSO).
• Professional, cooperative demeanor, and ability to work with other employees.
• Ability to meet customer needs while supporting VA missions.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine to moderately complex Nuclear Medicine examination procedures using SPECT, SPECT/CT and PET/CT.
• Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self using lead aprons, gloves, shields, lead-lined walls, and collimation, following ALARA principles.
• Explains exams to patients, ensuring they understand the procedure and potential hazards.
• May monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Maintains cleanliness and stocking of supplies in assigned areas.
• Reports equipment malfunctions to the supervisor in a timely manner.
• Communicates and treats customers (veterans, representatives, visitors, and staff) courteously, tactfully, and respectfully.
• Provides consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
• Handles conflict and problems constructively and appropriately.
