Intern - Nuclear Engineer - Summer 2027

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA
•$25 - $38•Onsite

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Nuclear Engineering Intern to join its Nuclear Engineering team. The 13–18 week internship offers meaningful, challenging project work. Interns may work on site in Devens, Massachusetts, and are responsible for their own transportation and housing if working on site. Assignments and technical requirements vary according to team needs. Opportunities are available to currently enrolled college students at levels from bachelor’s degree through PhD. Interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer. The intern will contribute to neutronics analyses, which may include energy-deposition analyses for delicate materials and shielding-sensitivity studies for diagnostic design. Working with Nuclear Engineering team engineers, the intern will perform calculations involving heating, activation, flux, and dose to support SPARC design and operation, ARC scoping, and other nuclear-engineering needs. The intern may also contribute to computational methods and workflows for supporting and optimizing neutronics analyses. The internship is expected to involve 40–50 hours per week. The hourly rate is aligned with year in school: $25–$32 for bachelor’s interns and $35–$38 for master’s or PhD interns. The posting lists benefits for full-time interns, including 40 hours of sick time, health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with employer matching (enrollment requires age 21 or older), professional growth opportunities, and team-building activities. The position requires occasional willingness to travel or work nights, weekends, or on-call, and dedication to safety around potential industrial hazards.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an engineering degree focused on Nuclear Engineering.
  • Have completed a Neutron Transport, Neutronics, or Reactor Theory course by the start of the internship.
  • Experience with MCNP or OpenMC.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work well on a team.
  • High motivation and drive to execute quickly, with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call occasionally.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Dedication to safety when working around potential hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in CAD.
  • Experience with Python or C++.
  • Experience with neutronics methods, including Monte Carlo or deterministic methods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform neutronics analyses, potentially including energy-deposition analyses for delicate materials and shielding-sensitivity studies for diagnostic design.
  • Collaborate with Nuclear Engineering team engineers on neutronics calculations involving heating, activation, flux, and dose.
  • Support the design and operation of SPARC, scoping of ARC, and other nuclear-engineering needs.
  • Contribute to computational methods and workflows that support and optimize neutronics analyses.
  • Follow safety practices to mitigate industrial hazards.

Benefits

  • 40 hours of sick time.
  • Health insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
