Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Nuclear Engineering Intern to contribute to nuclear engineering projects supporting fusion energy development. The internship lasts 13–18 weeks and requires 40–50 hours per week. Opportunities are available on site in Devens, Massachusetts; interns working on site are responsible for their own transportation and housing. Project assignments and required technical skills vary according to team needs. The program is open to currently enrolled college students at all levels from bachelor’s through PhD, and interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer. The intern will collaborate with Nuclear Engineering team members on neutronics analyses and calculations—including heating, activation, flux, and dose—to support the design and operation of SPARC, the scoping of ARC, and other nuclear engineering work. Projects may include energy-deposition analyses for delicate materials, shielding-sensitivity studies for diagnostic design, and computational development of methods and workflows for optimizing neutronics analyses. Compensation is based on year in school: $25–$32 per hour for bachelor’s interns and $35–$38 per hour for MS/PhD interns. The role may involve travel, occasional nights, weekends, or on-call work. It requires extended periods of typing, standing, or sitting and a commitment to safety in an industrial environment that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics. Full-time interns are offered 40 hours of sick time, health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with employer matching (enrollment requires being at least 21), professional growth opportunities, and team-building activities. Employment offers are contingent on compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.
