About The Position

This position is for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at the ICE facility in Jena, LA, known as the LaSalle ICE Processing Center. This facility primarily serves as a detention center for individuals undergoing immigration proceedings. The role involves providing psychiatric care within the scope of practice, under clinical oversight, and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The APP Psychiatry will diagnose and treat acute and chronic psychiatric disorders, including counseling, prescribing medications, and ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests. Telepsychiatry services may also be provided to other IHSC facilities as needed and permitted by licensure and facility regulations. The position requires adherence to IHSC's safety, prevention, infection control, quality improvement, and patient education programs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner or physician assistant program located in the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical provider experience in direct patient care.
  • Maintain current board certification as APMHMP by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (for PMHNP).
  • Maintain current certification of National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (for Physician Assistant).
  • Maintain an unrestricted license with the Drug Enforcement Agency and in the state in which the duty station is located.
  • Maintain BLS certification for health care providers through the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

  • Functions within the scope of his or her specialty under the clinical oversight of the chief of psychiatry, the clinical director (or designee), a designated consulting psychiatrist, and in accordance with a completed IHSC scope of practice agreement.
  • Operates under well-accepted practices and principles of psychiatric and medical care providers and follows IHSC scope of practice and as outlined in IHSC policy.
  • Works independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Coordinates mental health patient care, off-site referrals, and collaborative duties through scheduled appointments, sick calls, or walk-ins.
  • Diagnoses and treats acute and chronic psychiatric disorders, including providing counseling, support, and prescribing various medications in accordance with the approved IHSC scope of practice.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to the detainee's psychiatric needs.
  • Utilizes evidence-based tools and identification of risks associated with medication-induced movement disorders.
  • Provides telepsychiatry services for patients at other IHSC facilities as needed and as the local facility allows, only in the states the provider is licensed.
  • Adheres to IHSC's safety, prevention, infection and control, quality improvement, patient education, and other programs and collateral duties as appropriate to the position.
