About The Position

This position provides Cardiology services as required for assigned patients, assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services. The role involves obtaining and coordinating patient histories, physicals, laboratory results, charting clinical findings, and admission orders. The position requires close cooperation with the Hospital, Cardiologists, and other staff within the Cape Cod Healthcare system, and timely return of calls to patients and personnel. The individual will be immediately available to nurses and staff for patient-related questions and problems, and will assist in family liaison. Responsibilities also include various aspects of medical treatment care under physician supervision, such as fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education, and post-discharge planning. This includes managing and monitoring arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, and O-therapy, as well as assisting in the evaluation and management of clinical events and transfers to/from intensive care units. The role also involves patient education regarding discharge, preventive care, and risk factor reduction, writing discharge orders and prescriptions, and dictating discharge summaries. Additionally, the position may act as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and schedule follow-up care. Opportunities for participation in research are available, along with a requirement for continuing medical education to maintain certification. The role involves attending education meetings, reading professional journals, and advancing medical and tactical skills. The position will supervise medical students and teach students, staff, nurses, technicians, and cardiology fellows. Maintaining a professional attitude, developing sound working relationships, providing service excellence, and identifying process improvement opportunities are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) for NP
  • Masters from a program accredited by the ARC-PA for PA
  • Currently licensed as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for NP
  • Currently licensed as a Physician’s Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for PA
  • US Department of Justice DEA Registration (required if prescribing)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (obtain within 30 days of position start)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (obtain within 30 days of position start)

Nice To Haves

  • Nurse Practitioner, Cardiology Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of NP
  • 3+ years’ Cardiovascular service-line experience for NP
  • 3+ years’ Cardiovascular service-line experience for PA

Responsibilities

  • Provide Cardiology services as required for patients as assigned.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services.
  • Obtain and coordinate history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admissions orders, nursing instructions, and other required elements.
  • Work closely and cooperatively with the Hospital, Cardiologists, and other staff across the Cape Cod Healthcare system.
  • Return calls to patients and additional personnel on a timely basis.
  • Place timely calls to patients and additional personnel as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or to initiate treatment orders.
  • Be immediately available to nurses and other staff for questions and problems relating to patients during the course of their Hospital treatment, as well as on admission and discharge related matters.
  • Assist in family liaison.
  • Be responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and post-discharge planning.
  • Following procedures, manage and monitor arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O-therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under supervision of the attending physician.
  • Assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary, complication, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications and others.
  • Assist in transfers to and from the intensive care units.
  • Perform patient education regarding discharge including preventive care and risk factor reduction.
  • Write discharge orders, prescriptions and dictate discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician.
  • Act as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and schedule follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.
  • Participate in aspects of research involving planning, performance, and analysis of data, and publication.
  • Complete 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment to maintain PE certification status.
  • Pass a National PE re-certification exam every six years.
  • Attend internal and external education meetings and read appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence.
  • Advance medical and tactical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.
  • Supervise medical students (MD and/or physician assistant) who do clinical rotations in the Cardiology Department as directed by the attending physician.
  • Teach students, staff, nurses, technicians and cardiology fellows as instructed by the attending physician, particularly with regard to the evaluation, treatment and longitudinal care of patients with cardiovascular disease.
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved in patient care.
  • Consistently provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
