About The Position

This position provides essential Cardiology services, assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services. The role involves coordinating patient care, including history and physicals, laboratory results, charting, and admission orders. The NP/PA will work collaboratively with physicians, hospital staff, and other healthcare professionals across the Cape Cod Healthcare system, ensuring timely communication with patients and personnel. A key aspect of the role is providing immediate support to nurses and staff regarding patient care during hospital treatment, admissions, and discharges, as well as assisting with family liaison. The position also plays a crucial role in medical treatment care under physician supervision, managing various aspects of patient health, including fluid and electrolyte balance, pain management, and post-discharge planning. This includes monitoring arrhythmias, managing drug therapies, and responding to clinical events. Furthermore, the NP/PA will be involved in discharge planning, educating patients on preventive care, writing discharge orders, and coordinating follow-up care. Opportunities for research participation and a commitment to continuous education are integral to the role, requiring completion of continuing medical education hours and maintaining certifications. The position also involves supervising and teaching medical students, staff, nurses, technicians, and cardiology fellows, focusing on the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Maintaining a professional attitude, providing service excellence, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives are expected.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) for NP role
  • Currently licensed as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for NP role
  • US Department of Justice DEA Registration (required if prescribing)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (obtain within 30 days of position start)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (obtain within 30 days of position start)
  • Masters from a program accredited by the ARC-PA for PA role
  • Currently licensed as a Physician’s Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for PA role

Nice To Haves

  • Nurse Practitioner, Cardiology Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of NP (Preferred)
  • 3+ years’ Cardiovascular service-line experience (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provide Cardiology services as required for patients assigned, consistent with legal requirements and in a professional manner.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services.
  • Obtain and coordinate history and physicals, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admissions orders, nursing instructions, and other required elements.
  • Work closely and cooperatively with the Hospital, Cardiologists, and other staff across the Cape Cod Healthcare system.
  • Return calls to patients and additional personnel on a timely basis, and place timely calls as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or to initiate treatment orders.
  • Be immediately available to nurses and other staff for questions and problems relating to patients during their hospital treatment, as well as on admission and discharge related matters.
  • Assist in family liaison.
  • Manage and monitor aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education, and post-discharge planning.
  • Manage and monitor arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O2 therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under supervision of the attending physician.
  • Assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary complications, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications, and others.
  • Assist in transfers to and from intensive care units.
  • Perform patient education regarding discharge, including preventive care and risk factor reduction.
  • Write discharge orders, prescriptions, and dictate discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician.
  • Act as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and schedule follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.
  • Participate in aspects of research involving planning, performance, and analysis of data, and publication.
  • Complete 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment to maintain PE certification status.
  • Attend internal and external education meetings and read appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence.
  • Advance medical and tactical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.
  • Supervise medical students (MD and/or physician assistant) who do clinical rotations in the Cardiology Department as directed by the attending physician.
  • Teach students, staff, nurses, technicians, and cardiology fellows as instructed by the attending physician, particularly with regard to the evaluation, treatment, and longitudinal care of patients with cardiovascular disease.
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved in patient care.
  • Consistently provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Challenge current working practices, identify process improvement opportunities, and present recommendations and solutions to management.
