About The Position

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking to fill a non-tenure track teaching-focused Professor of Practice faculty position in Controls/Industrial Applications. This role is open-rank, meaning the title will be commensurate with the candidate's experience (assistant, associate, or full professor of practice). The position is primarily teaching-intensive, with no research obligations. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching multiple core and elective chemical engineering courses, mentoring undergraduate students, and providing career and professional advising. Specific courses of interest include Process Measurement & Control, Process & Plant Design, and Unit Operations Laboratory. Additionally, Professors of Practice are expected to contribute to departmental service, committee work, and the evaluation and development of the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum. The department serves approximately 330 undergraduate and 60 graduate students and comprises 16 tenure-track faculty, one existing Professor of Practice, academic advisors, and support staff. The department also supports active student organizations and competitive teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience applying engineering principles in industry, business, government, nonprofit, and/or research settings.
  • An advanced degree in chemical engineering or a closely related field or business, OR professional licensure (i.e. Professional Engineer), OR equivalent industry experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD in chemical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Significant professional experience applying engineering principles in industry, business, government, nonprofit, and/or research settings.
  • Experience with capital projects, engineering design, or process control.
  • Experience engaging with clients from a variety of industries, organizations, and/or disciplines.
  • Involvement with the professional community or professional organizations (e.g., AIChE, ACS, SPE).
  • Prior teaching experience at the university level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in teaching, mentoring, and advising undergraduate engineering students.

Responsibilities

  • Teach multiple core and elective chemical engineering courses.
  • Provide mentoring and career and professional advising to undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to teaching Process Measurement & Control, Process & Plant Design, and Unit Operations Laboratory courses.
  • Participate in department service and committee work.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and ongoing development of the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum.
