About The Position

Apple’s Acoustics team works to improve customers’ experiences of sound across Apple products. The Noise & Vibration team contributes to hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting to reduce distracting audible noises and optimize sound quality. The team includes acoustics and vibration specialists who collaborate with multifunctional teams to solve engineering challenges. The Noise & Vibration Engineer will lead noise and vibration activities in Shenzhen, China. The role includes developing factory acoustic-noise testing methods and procedures, analyzing noise and sound-quality data, resolving design and process noise issues, and setting up factory test laboratories. The engineer will coordinate with contract manufacturers and collaborate with Apple teams in the United States, Shenzhen, and headquarters. The position involves domestic travel several times per year and occasional international travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, or a related field with at least 5 years of directly relevant experience; or a master’s degree with at least 3 years of directly relevant experience; equivalent practical experience or a PhD may also qualify.
  • Strong theoretical and experimental background in acoustics and/or vibration.
  • Solid noise and vibration testing and data-analysis skills, and familiarity with typical noise and vibration testing equipment and analysis tools.
  • Acute acoustic listening ability and critical judgment across the audible frequency spectrum for subjective sound-quality evaluation.
  • Good programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent languages for test automation, signal analysis, and data visualization.
  • Excellent English communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Ability to contribute effectively in a fast-paced, changing, multitasking environment with shifting priorities.
  • Flexibility in problem-solving approaches.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vibration modal testing and analysis.
  • Experience leveraging LLMs or AI-assisted tools for engineering workflows.
  • Proven experience in multinational companies, working with cross-functional teams, and/or working with contract manufacturers and suppliers is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Implement test methodologies, write test scripts, and create test plans and standard operating procedures for acoustic-noise testing in factory environments.
  • Analyze data using noise levels, noise spectra, and sound-quality metrics.
  • Troubleshoot design or process issues that result in unwanted acoustic noise.
  • Create and implement innovative testing and noise-issue-resolution solutions.
  • Work with Apple US and other Noise & Vibration teams, as well as local and headquarters cross-functional teams, on noise and vibration activities.
  • Coordinate with contract manufacturer teams on testing, failure analysis, data management, and work planning to support smooth lab operation and timely delivery of high-quality test data and troubleshooting results.
  • Set up factory noise and vibration test labs and bring up testers.
