The Hearst Fellowship for Newsroom AI Development is a one-year program focused on building tools for journalists and experiences for readers using cutting-edge technology. The successful candidate will embed on the DevHub, Hearst’s San Francisco-based editorial innovation team, and work on AI-assisted projects, tools, and news products with core product and engineering teams and Hearst metro newsrooms. Fellows receive training, mentorship, and real-world experience alongside journalist-programmers who build interactive experiences and automation tools focused on connecting with local communities. Hearst Fellows are full-time employees with a competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance, a relocation allowance, and a housing stipend. The program aims to train Fellows for future full-time employment, though participation does not guarantee a position after the yearlong term. The DevHub includes editorial engineers, AI developers, data journalists, interactive designers, and content strategists who collaborate with local newsrooms on digital experiences such as election results pages, AI tools, searchable databases, severe weather trackers, and alternative story formats.
