About The Position

News Reporters are responsible for specific beats assigned by the News Editor and writing news stories based on those beats for publication in The Xavierite. Reporters are expected to produce one to two news stories per issue. This role supports the development of NACE Career Readiness Competencies, including Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology, and Communication. The position involves reporting on SXU and local news events, writing articles in the pyramid news style, ensuring accuracy and fairness, and adhering to journalistic standards and ethics. Reporters are also part of the Student Media Street Team, attend general staff meetings, meet weekly with their Section Editor, maintain weekly office hours, and attend news writing workshops. They may also assist with section layout.

Requirements

  • MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY
  • Must be Federal Work Study Eligible
  • Must Include a Resume and Cover Letter

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in journalism, communication, or English preferred

Responsibilities

  • Reports on all SXU and local area news events
  • Produces one-two articles per week
  • Writes stories following the pyramid news writing style
  • Ensures all articles are written accurately, fairly, and with as little biased as possible following journalist standards and ethics
  • Is a leading member of the Student Media Street Team
  • Attends general staff meeting
  • Meets weekly with Section Editor
  • Maintain weekly-posted office hours in The Xavierite office (4 hours per week)
  • Attends news writing workshop held by Director of Student Media
  • Assists with the layout of the section
