About The Position

The News Editor is responsible for the news section of The Xavierite. The News Editor is responsible for assigning beats to news reporters and correspondents as well as maintaining contacts with contributors for the News Section. This student employment opportunity supports the development of skills aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies. Through this role, students will strengthen the following competencies: Professionalism: Students build professionalism by practicing dependability, accountability, confidentiality when applicable, workplace etiquette, and respectful service in a workplace setting. Teamwork: Students build teamwork skills by collaborating with supervisors, staff, and peers to support department goals, assist others, and contribute to a positive work environment. Technology: Students build technology skills by using department systems, software, digital tools, equipment, or university platforms to complete tasks accurately and efficiently. Communication: Students build communication skills by practicing clear, respectful, and professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in a workplace setting.

Requirements

  • MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY
  • Must be Federal Work Study Eligible
  • Must Include a Resume and Cover Letter

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the news section and its stories.
  • Responsible for the News Section layout of The Xavierite newspaper
  • Reports on all SXU and local area news events
  • Ensures that the News Section is 3 pages of content per issue.
  • Writes stories following the pyramid news writing style
  • Ensures all articles are written accurately, fairly, and with as little biased as possible
  • Produces 2 articles per week and oversees section layout
  • Attends weekly section meeting with the Editor in Chief and Deputy Editor in Chief
  • Attends weekly general staff meeting.
  • Meets weekly with his/her section writers
  • Maintains weekly-posted office hours in The Xavierite office. (6 hours per week)
  • Attends news writing workshop held by Journalistic advisor and Assistant Director of Campus Life: Student Media.
  • Ensures that The Xavierite website has up to date stories
