Under supervision of the Newborn Screening (NBS) Nurse Supervisor, the employee serves as a case coordinator for the NBS Program for infants with abnormal screening results for genetic and metabolic disorders. Disorder areas include endocrine, hemoglobin, metabolic, lysosomal, and other disorders. The role involves notifying hospitals, physician offices, and/or appropriate medical staff concerning infants with abnormal NBS lab results, and collaborating with healthcare providers to ensure linkage to care for infants identified with potential NBS disorders. The position also establishes and maintains accurate and complete patient case files, and provides guidance and technical assistance to physician offices, hospitals, and health department staff regarding newborn screening procedures, with an emphasis on protocols related to endocrine disorders, hemoglobin disorders, inborn errors of metabolism, and other rare disorders as assigned. Additionally, the role involves collaborating with IT and Project Management Office (PMO) staff to develop and implement an electronic patient case management system, and working with all stakeholders on issues related to current and expanded NBS testing. The employee will acquire and maintain competency in the new NBS IT system. Collaboration with the SC Public Health Laboratory (PHL) and related Bureau of Maternal & Child Health (MCH) staff is required for developing and implementing Quality Improvement (QI) activities and marketing materials. The position also involves populating the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) data repository by keying and/or importing select patient data. Participation in pertinent meetings and trainings, other duties as assigned, performing other related duties and special projects as assigned, including required travel if requested, and responding as directed during emergencies which may occur outside normal work hours, and travel if required.
