About The Position

This position is for a Lab Tech II as a NBS Sample Processor at the Utah Public Health Laboratory. In this position you are responsible for the entire pre-analytical process which includes receiving the sample, entering demographic data for the sample, as well as opening the sample and preparing it for testing in the Newborn screening testing section of the lab. Due to the nature of this position, compliance with the Utah Department of Health Employee Immunization policy is required. This position also requires an initial blood sample for hepatitis and TB (tuberculosis) testing upon hire and a TB test is required annually. We are looking for candidates willing to work shifts between 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday - Friday with a rotating Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform a high volume of data entry.
  • Exceptional phone and in person direct customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with hospital and clinical staff.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety practices.
  • Skill and ability to review and/or edit documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Must reside within the State of Utah or plan on residing within the State of Utah within 30 days of your start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Can type at a minimum speed of 35 words per minute.
  • Prior experience with specimen processing or worked a clinical/laboratory setting.
  • Are a current or former UPHL or DHHS employee.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately enter all received and prepared samples into the Laboratory Information System (LIMS).
  • Correctly label samples by a barcode labeling system.
  • Sort, label, and maintain the integrity of all specimens.
  • Store and dispose of various samples and/or hazardous materials using prescribed methods.
  • Clean, sterilize, and/or disinfect areas and/or equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Assist the public and communicate with other clinics and labs regarding technical questions.
