About The Position

The incumbent assists the Director of New Student Orientation with all aspects of the New Student Orientation program that serves 30,000 prospective students and 10,000 guests annually. The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the coordination of the mandatory New Student Orientation program. Duties include developing and managing the program schedule; assisting in overall program operations, creating, editing, and overseeing orientation publications; maintaining and updating the orientation website; delivering presentations to large audiences of students and supporters; coordinating the culminating orientation activities; and assisting with the recruitment, training, and supervision of 45–50 student leaders. The coordination of this program requires frequent communication with a variety of campus departments and attention to detail. The incumbent is expected to work with minimal supervision; adapt to rapidly changing circumstances; and, under the general direction of the Director, make complex decisions daily. The incumbent must be available to work some evenings and weekends. This position reports to the Director and oversees Orientation in the absence of the Director. The incumbent must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student/faculty/staff population.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Higher education student services experience (e.g. advising, admissions, residential life, New Student Orientation, student programming, or development).
  • Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience working with students dealing with highly sensitive issues.
  • Experience providing lead work direction.
  • Experience with program assessment.
  • Demonstrated program development experience.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a variety of campus constituencies, including faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to independently prioritize, plan, and organize work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated data management/interpretive skills.
  • Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft).
  • Fluent with standard office software packages such as Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to understand, interpret, analyze, and apply complex rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Experience advising students individually and in groups on complex student related matters
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.
  • Satisfactory completion of the background check process.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or related field.
  • Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system.
  • Experience supporting first-generation, low-income, and historically underrepresented students.
  • Experience supervising student staff.
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities without detailed instructions
  • Experience utilizing social media.
