The Medical Surg/ED Nurse Residency is a supervised program for new graduate nurses, designed to develop basic care and critical-care skills and transition residents into primary care nursing. Residents use critical-thinking and research skills to identify, plan, and provide individualized patient care in Medical Surgical and Emergency Department settings. The program aims to foster nursing growth in a team-oriented environment and includes didactic instruction, clinically supervised experience, scheduled orientation, weekly conferences, hands-on EKG education and testing, and mentorship from experienced nurses. Residents attend weekly four-hour classes and work with a preceptor for three 12-hour shifts each week. The posted schedule is generally 36 hours per week, with 40 hours per week during the first 12 weeks due to classroom sessions. A four-hour shadowing experience with an experienced nurse may be available before deciding whether to accept a residency position.
