About The Position

Under the supervision of the Senior Network Analyst, the Network Technician performs network software administration for the Compton Unified School District's Network to facilitate the exchange of information between locations. This role involves improving data communications systems, coordinating and developing standards for connecting personal computers to the operational network, and providing technical assistance to users regarding network applications. The position also establishes and maintains desktop configurations and standards for all computers accessing the district's network, ensures quality of services, and provides technical assistance to the user base concerning district desktop configuration. Incumbents perform network hardware administration and maintenance to facilitate information exchange and improve data communications systems. They also coordinate and assist in developing standards for network connectivity, provide technical assistance for district network wiring and connectivity, and perform network hardware administration and maintenance. The role primarily involves software administration and security for the district's network infrastructure, standardizing desktop configurations, and supervising their implementation, maintenance, and support by helpdesk personnel. It includes maintaining data connectivity equipment and troubleshooting PC connectivity to the network infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Three years experience in installing desktop computers in large-scale environments.
  • Three years experience in installing LANs and WANs including experience with TCP/IP.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in computer science, business administration, electrical engineering, or closely related field of study.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Incumbent is required to use personal vehicle and provide proof of auto insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Administration of user accounts, user naming conventions, server and workstation naming conventions.
  • Design and functionality of site servers, e-mail servers and user accounts.
  • Backup and restoration processes of user data as required.
  • Solving problems related to duties escalated from helpdesk personnel.
  • Maintaining and upgrading district servers as needed.
  • Software licensing and access policy enforcement.
  • Monitoring server usage to ensure optimal performance.
  • Logon scripts and user profile implementation and functionality.
  • Desktop standards and minimum PC configurations.
  • Network print functions.
  • Assisting users with software configurations.
  • Troubleshooting difficult and intermittent desktop problems.
  • Connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Assisting with new software rollouts and user transitions/upgrades.
  • Meeting with user base and clearly communicating changes and fixes.
  • Desktop security and maintenance.
  • Desktop software licensing and access policy enforcement.
  • Monitoring service requests to ensure optimal performance.
  • Maintaining network routers and switch configuration.
  • Installing network equipment and patch cables.
  • Creating custom data cables.
  • Troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • DHCP, WINS, and TCP/IP configurations.
  • Network security maintenance.
  • Monitoring and enforcing equipment software licensing and access policy.
  • Evaluating and recommending desktop systems, network components, telecommunications methods, server components, data communication protocols, and other network application system particulars.
  • Resolving difficult or complex data communications problems through on-site analysis.
  • Meeting and communicating with desktop vendors.
  • Analyzing the capabilities of existing hardware and software and recommending changes and improvements.
  • Formulating operational designs for the development, maintenance, and improvement of user access and security.
  • Repairing, installing, network testing, and evaluating equipment to ensure maximum network availability.
  • Providing solutions and technical assistance to users for increasing productivity through the use of network resources.
  • Evaluating new applications to determine their effect on the network.
  • Interfacing with technical and managerial personnel to determine network application systems configuration.
  • Preparing and updating operations procedure manuals.
  • Training users regarding changes to the LAN or WAN and desktop configuration.
  • Monitoring systems to support and control network traffic.
  • Supervising the work of designated persons performing computer installation and repair.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
