Network Planner, Network Infrastructure

Meta•Menlo Park, CA
•$122,000 - $181,000

About The Position

Meta is seeking a Network Planner to join its backbone team and support expansion of its global, ultra-high-capacity backbone network. The role focuses on planning and designing network capacity and infrastructure to meet scaling, resiliency, and latency requirements. The planner works with Software Engineering, Product Engineering, Network Engineering, finance, and sourcing teams to develop planning models, establish design standards, evolve fiber topology, and support backbone fiber acquisition strategies.

Requirements

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience; the degree must be completed before joining Meta.
  • At least 3 years of experience in network planning in a high-capacity, mission-critical environment.
  • Experience designing IP, optical, or fiber networks and knowledge of current technology.
  • Knowledge of network topology and experience building resiliency designs.
  • Programming experience in Python or a similar language.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices, such as risk assessment, bias mitigation, and quality and accuracy reviews.
  • At least 2 years of experience with network modeling tools such as NPS, One Planner, Opnet, Cariden, WAE, Aria, WANDL, or other in-house tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows and drive measurable impact, such as efficiency gains or quality improvements.
  • Experience modeling and analyzing a business case for network expansion or fiber acquisition.
  • Experience with production transport network design.
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development, such as prompt/context engineering or agent orchestration, and staying current with emerging AI technologies.
  • Experience with both terrestrial and submarine networks is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze traffic capacity projections and develop corresponding optical transport network capacity plans.
  • Partner with Software Engineering and Product Engineering teams to develop capacity-planning models and optimization simulations for network infrastructure.
  • Partner with Network Engineering teams to establish new design standards and implement them in production.
  • Follow developments in IP and optical technology roadmaps and capabilities.
  • Design networks that account for technological capabilities and routing, ensuring the network meets scaling and resiliency requirements.
  • Model ad hoc what-if scenarios, including greenfield and brownfield demand and supply scenarios, to set strategy.
  • Investigate network failures and routing behaviors, and create simulation tests to improve network efficiency and reliability metrics.
  • Oversee backbone fiber topology evolution to meet resiliency and latency requirements.
  • Work with engineering, finance, and sourcing teams to support backbone fiber acquisition strategies.
