About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring customers have continuous access to the innovation they rely on. The AWS Network Engineering Organization is seeking a Network Development Engineer to join the Internet Edge team. This role involves partnering with the broader Infrastructure organization on configuration standards and tools, and collaborating with Systems and Software Engineers for the smooth rollout of new designs and products. The Internet Edge team builds and designs a complex external-facing network that facilitates efficient internet traffic flow between data centers and customers, focusing on the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications globally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols
  • Knowledge of network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting
  • Experience in major internet routing protocols, specifically BGP and OSPF
  • Experience with network operating systems such as Cisco IOS and Junos
  • Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or experience with networking and troubleshooting (TCP/IP, DNS, routing, switching, firewalls, LAN/WAN, traceroute, iperf, dig, cURL or related) at an advanced level
  • 1+ years of major internet routing protocols experience
  • 1+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures
  • Experience with Unix and scripting in Perl, shell, C or C++
  • Experience working with customers to diagnose a problem and work towards resolution
  • Knowledge of networking protocols such as HTTP, DNS and TCP/IP
  • Knowledge of network design, protocols and troubleshooting
  • Experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure, or experience troubleshooting and documenting findings

Responsibilities

  • Deploying network infrastructure across all network fabrics supporting Amazon Retail Service, Kindle, Payments, and multiple AWS services.
  • Deploying, scaling, and automating the network across multiple global datacenters, including existing footprints and greenfield locations.
  • Driving the scaling of current network designs to meet customer demand.
  • Creating simple, repetitive deployment processes to increase both velocity and quality.
  • Collaborating with internal customers on designs/solutions, bringing them from concept to production.
  • Creating and updating network standards and ensuring network deployment adheres to these standards.
  • Creating and implementing changes on the network.
  • Collaborating with automation teams to define tools that enable scaling at higher volumes.
  • Evolving routing policy, implementing traffic engineering solutions, growing peering footprint, securing the external network, and architecting hardware platforms and network design.
  • Developing automation, writing software, and working with partner teams to improve and automate Internet connectivity in areas such as capacity delivery, configuration deployment, impairment detection, and traffic optimization.
  • Making day-to-day and long-term strategic decisions with significant impact across all of Amazon’s products.
  • Supporting an off-hours operations escalation pager rotation.
  • Managing customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
  • Sitting at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
  • Traveling to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
