The NDT Technician Assistant supports certified NDT Technicians in inspecting materials and components—such as pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural steel—without damaging them. The assistant helps set up, prepare, calibrate, and operate testing equipment; supports inspections; identifies material defects; and documents results or assists with cleanup. Testing methods may include gamma and X-ray radiography, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, leak testing, and visual inspections. Work takes place at plants, pipelines, and other industrial facilities, often outdoors and in physically demanding conditions. The role involves following strict safety procedures, including precautions related to radiation, heights, confined spaces, and other workplace hazards. The assistant may travel long distances and stay at job sites for extended periods. PROtect describes the role as an entry point to NDT careers, with training, certification support, and advancement opportunities.
