About The Position

S&ME is seeking a dedicated NDT/NDE Technician for their Metals team in Wilmington, North Carolina. This role is crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and safety of projects by visually inspecting structural steel, including bolted and welded connections. The position involves significant fieldwork, potentially requiring climbing steel structures like buildings, cell phone towers, and water tanks to heights exceeding 200 feet, utilizing fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, performing non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic inspection (UT) and magnetic particle testing (MT) of welds, managing testing assignments across various projects, maintaining and calibrating testing equipment, and creating detailed reports of findings. The role may require working over 50 hours per week during peak periods, as well as off-shift and weekend work.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of NDT/NDE metals testing experience OR an Associate's degree in a closely related field
  • Active industry-related certifications: AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or working towards it
  • AMPP Coating Inspector Level I or II
  • Achievement of ASNT Level II certification per ASNT-SNT-TC-1A in at least one method
  • Valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs
  • Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as: Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions, Climbing heights over 200 feet, Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. of materials and equipment, Safely handling field tools and maneuvering equipment on active construction sites
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours and travel (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Safety, DDC, NDT, and Radiation Training, including the use of fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems
  • Additional certifications: ICC certification in Building Inspections and/or Structural Steel Inspection
  • Level II for UT certification
  • Level II for PT, MT certifications

Responsibilities

  • Visually inspect structural steel, including bolted and welded connections.
  • Conduct fieldwork that may involve safely climbing steel structures such as buildings, cell phone towers, and water tanks to heights exceeding 200 feet, using fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems.
  • Conduct inspections and deploy non-destructive testing methods to uphold impeccable quality standards.
  • Perform non-destructive testing (NDT) duties such as ultrasonic inspection (UT) of welds and/or magnetic particle testing (MT) of welds.
  • Juggle testing assignments across projects, contributing to the success of each endeavor.
  • Maintain testing equipment in working order and calibration; can include managing field and laboratory equipment inventories, formal calibration records, and participating in quality systems audits.
  • Craft detailed reports to effectively communicate findings.
