About The Position

The National History Day State Coordinator supports the mission of the Utah Historical Society (UHS) by implementing programs aligned with the Director of Education & Engagement’s (E&E) vision and strategic priorities for K-12 education. This position is responsible for directing and coordinating the statewide National History Day® in Utah program. Working under the Manager of K-12 Services, the National History Day State Coordinator collaborates closely with the broader Education & Engagement team – including museum education, public programming, publications, and women’s history – to ensure all National History Day offerings across the state reflect the E&E team’s unified goals. In 2014, UHS became the institutional home of Utah’s National History Day affiliate; a program that had been developed and operated by Utah State University since 1980.

Requirements

  • Three or more years experience participating in or managing NHD programs.
  • Experience developing and presenting programs and training sessions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, adults, and volunteers who have different educational and professional backgrounds and cultural histories.
  • Strong event planning and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on the production of quality work.
  • Creative thinking, problem-solving skills, flexibility, and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work independently in a changing environment, and as part of a team with internal and external participants and stakeholders.
  • Experience with Google Suite, including Docs, Slides, Sheets, Meet, Mail, and Chat; Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Availability for evening and weekend events, as well as in-state and out-of-state travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, public history, history education, or related humanities discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute contests, professional learning, meetings, and events throughout the year.
  • Manage program budget.
  • Develop and implement strategic annual and long-range planning for NHD.
  • Track and report metrics and outcomes for NHD programs and services.
  • Work with the UHS administrative team to identify potential grant, sponsor, and partner opportunities.
  • Manage NHD classroom interns.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to schools, teachers, and students participating in the NHD Utah program statewide.
  • Maintain excellent communication with participating schools and teachers.
  • Develop and implement classroom and contest materials for teachers and students.
  • Provide teacher professional development supporting NHD best practices.
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and training of district and regional NHD coordinators and other volunteers. Serve as the connector between national and local NHD coordinators and teachers.
  • Plan and coordinate regular coordinator meetings.
  • Assist local programs in recruiting judges and volunteers.
  • Attend and assist in local contests across the state.
  • Plan and execute the annual NHD Utah State Contest each year in April, including: event booking and planning, registration, scheduling, communication, judge recruitment and training, competition management, and follow-up.
  • Prepare, support, and lead Utah’s delegation to the annual National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland, each June. Duties include event planning and scheduling, fundraising, mentoring workshops, and fulfilling national contest duties.
  • Establish strategic partnerships with public history organizations, universities, districts, schools, and community groups to support various aspects of this statewide program.
  • Conduct targeted outreach and recruitment to bring new teachers, schools, families, and volunteers into the program, including students in rural, low-income, and underserved communities statewide.
  • Table and present at relevant educator conferences and venues.
  • Work with division communications and marketing teams, district leaders, and others to promote the program with educators, students, parents, volunteers, legislators, and other stakeholders.
