About The Position

The Financial Post is seeking an experienced, ambitious editor to join its editorial leadership team as National Bureau Chief. Based in Toronto, this role helps shape coverage of Canadian business and the economy nationwide, working with senior editors in Toronto and regional bureau chiefs across the country to identify important stories and strengthen national coverage. The position also directs a team of reporters in Ontario and Quebec.

The role calls for an editor with strong news judgment who can identify the forces behind current events and help reporters produce timely, authoritative journalism valuable to Financial Post readers. The National Bureau Chief contributes to multimedia offerings and new editorial products, maintains editorial standards, develops national editorial franchises, and supports the broader leadership of the newsroom.

Requirements

• At least five years of experience in a daily newsroom.
• Excellent news judgment and the ability to identify stories, trends, and developments relevant to readers.
• Ability to explain why events happened, what is driving them, and what may come next.
• Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines.
• Comfort working across formats including breaking news, daily analysis, explanatory journalism, enterprise reporting, and long-form features.
• Strong understanding of Canadian business and the economy, and appetite to develop that knowledge further.
• Collaborative leadership skills and ability to work effectively with reporters, editors, and newsroom leaders.

Responsibilities

• Work with regional bureau chiefs to identify priorities and compile a daily schedule of stories.
• Monitor sister publications for business and economic coverage that may resonate with a national audience.
• Direct a team of reporters in Ontario and Quebec covering their regional economies, including sectors such as automotive and critical minerals.
• Set coverage priorities, develop story ideas, assign and direct daily stories, and provide timely, constructive editing as needed.
• Contribute to video, podcast, and other multimedia offerings as needed.
• Help develop and oversee editorial products such as newsletters and in-person events in Ontario and Quebec.
• Maintain high editorial standards, ensuring regional coverage meets the Financial Post's standards for accuracy, fairness, insight, and relevance.
• Work with regional bureau chiefs and senior editors to build national editorial franchises that distinguish the Financial Post and deepen coverage of Canadian business and the economy.
• Contribute to newsroom leadership by assisting the senior editorial team with editorial oversight and other priorities as needed.
