About The Position

The Musical Director will produce and direct a musical for school and public performances, adhering to safety guidelines and creating the production calendar in collaboration with school and VPA department. This role applies a social justice approach and equity lens in all aspects of casting and process. The Musical Director will design and conduct recruitment/outreach programs to attract theater participants, teach acting principles and techniques, and instruct students on enunciation, diction, and voice development. They will discuss and demonstrate vocal and body expression to teach acting styles, character development, and personality projection. Auditions will be conducted to select cast and assign parts using an equity lens, and students will be rehearsed and drilled to master their parts. The Musical Director will coordinate with the VPA department for necessary support staff, work with tech/costume teams to assign non-performing students to backstage production tasks, and select the script for production. They will ensure timely submission and payment of all royalties, rental fees, and other production-related expenses, maintain accurate financial records, and present the budget to the VPA department. Securing and reserving rehearsal and performance facilities, overseeing the organization and storage of theatrical equipment, and developing a rehearsal schedule are also key responsibilities. Any other duty necessary to the success of a production will be undertaken.

Requirements

Valid Massachusetts Theater Education certification
Demonstrates expertise in knowledge and teaching of dramatics.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Responsibilities

Selects script for production and coordinates with VPA department for timely submission and payment of all royalties, rental fees, and other fees/bills associated with a production.
Maintains an accurate record of all expenses and receipts.
Presents budget to VPA department.
Secures and reserves rehearsal and performance facilities with building administration.
Oversees proper organization and storage of stock theatrical units, props, and school-owned equipment and material.
Organizes, plans, and directs the respective play.
Ensures process for costume and properties rental and purchase.
Works with staff for lighting and sound design and application and set design and construction.
Develops a rehearsal schedule.
Performs any other duty necessary to the success of a production.
