About The Position

The full-time music instructor will be responsible for the preparation and teaching of music appreciation courses, applied lessons to wind and percussion students, and other courses based upon departmental need. Additionally, this position will direct the college and community instrumental/band ensemble(s) and will also actively participate in recruitment and retention. Other on-campus duties shall include but are not limited to college committee service, student advising, and divisional and college duties as assigned. Full-time faculty members are directly responsible to their division chairpersons and are required to devote a minimum of 35 hours per week to the performance of their on-campus duties.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree with 18 graduate semester hours in field
  • Evidence of successful band direction at the secondary or post-secondary level
  • Evidence of high-level rehearsal/conducting skills
  • Ability to develop and deliver traditional, hybrid, and online courses
  • Proficient in Word Processing, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Excel, and Canvas, etc.
  • Knowledgeable concerning web-based instruction and the delivery of instruction through the internet.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching successfully at the college level.
  • 3+ years of successful high school or collegiate teaching experience.
  • Strong evidence of successful recruiting and retention in a rural community.
  • The ability to confidently teach multiple levels of Music theory.
  • Experience working with theatrical productions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach music appreciation courses, applied lessons to wind and percussion students, and other courses based upon departmental need.
  • Direct the college and community instrumental/band ensemble(s).
  • Actively participate in recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Provide first day course information including course objectives, outline of content, evaluation methods/grading criteria, and student responsibilities relative to attendance, punctuality, conduct, or other behaviors.
  • Review and revise course syllabi, textbooks, and other materials, and methods in all courses taught.
  • Plan carefully for each class session.
  • Meet with classes regularly and punctually or make other arrangements for all scheduled classes.
  • Teach classes to meet stated objectives.
  • Maintain adequate and accurate student records and make timely reports.
  • Maintain and follow approved course syllabi in presentation of course content.
  • Teach Music Appreciation, Music Theory/Music Theory Lab, Basic Musicianship, Applied Instrumental lessons, Rehearsal and Performance I, II, III and IV, Jazz Show Band, and Concert Band.
  • Assist with the acquisition and maintenance of instruction-related equipment.
  • Conduct appropriate learning assessments, grade student work, return student work promptly, and evaluate students based on stated objectives.
  • Treat all students impartially and with respect.
  • Be accessible to students outside of scheduled classes.
  • Advise students in planning their academic programs.
  • Promote leadership and enrichment experiences through student organizations and/or other activities as assigned.
  • Accommodate students with documented disabilities.
  • Attend and participate in divisional meetings.
  • Work cooperatively with others to plan and accomplish the goals of the division.
  • Provide input into curricula and program development.
  • Complete other tasks assigned by the division chairperson.
  • Recruit students for participation in division programs.
  • Assist with division performances.
  • Assist with recruitment of personnel.
  • Assist with concert preparation and presentation.
  • Provide input for Student Services unit budget(s) for ensembles.
  • Assist with procuring and maintaining ensemble music, instruments, and equipment.
  • Assist with providing a dynamic public relations service for the college.
  • Provide music education opportunities and entertainment for civic, community, state, education, and military organizations.
  • Operate within the organizational structures and policies of the College.
  • Work cooperatively with others to plan and accomplish the goals of the College.
  • Attend and participate in college-wide meetings.
  • Participate on committees.
  • Sponsor student clubs, organizations, and teams as needed.
  • Complete additional tasks assigned by the Dean of Instruction and/or the President.
  • Participate in College sponsored professional development programs.
  • Remain informed of trends and developments affecting the instructor’s discipline and job performance.
  • Identify own needs and seek appropriate resources to meet goals for professional development.
