About The Position

The Music Director for High School Musical is a supplemental position responsible for assisting in the audition process, teaching vocal parts and harmonies, and ensuring the musical aspects of the production meet high standards while prioritizing student vocal health and well-being. This role involves attending rehearsals and performances, working with the Artistic Director on musical selection and safety, and creating a positive learning environment for students.

Requirements

Degree in music education and/or music directing experience strongly preferred
Singing and vocal coaching experience strongly preferred
Conducting experience preferred
Basic piano skills preferred

Responsibilities

Assists in running the audition process including student auditions to select cast and assign parts.
Attends rehearsals at least two to three times per week according to the schedule set by the Artistic Director.
Attends every rehearsal within the final weeks of the production, as well as all performances.
Teaches all vocal parts and harmonies to individuals and groups and conducts vocal music rehearsals.
Selects and provides resources like reference recordings or rehearsal tracks for students to study vocal parts individually outside of rehearsals.
Hires or appoints a rehearsal piano accompanist for the production.
Teaches, models, and coaches vocal techniques appropriate for the style of the show.
Sets expectations of high-quality, yet realistic performance standards without sacrificing student vocal health and/or social-emotional well-being.
Recruits instrumentalists, assigns parts, and conducts the pit orchestra, or hires/appoints a conductor for the performances.
Thoroughly studies the show and its musical score in preparation for casting and rehearsals.
Assists with the selection of a yearly musical in collaboration with the Artistic Director and the full-time GHHS Vocal Music Director.
Works with the Artistic Director to ensure the safety of students by adhering to both stage safety while on stage and school rules and regulations as set by the Board of Education and the state.
Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Deals with inappropriate behavior quickly and effectively according to the school behavior policy.
