About The Position

The Music Coordinator is a part-time position responsible for fostering the spiritual growth and musical talents of the parish's youth and adults. The coordinator will direct, recruit, and train children, teenagers, and adults to actively participate in the liturgy through sacred music. The goal is to help them understand their role as liturgical ministers while building a foundation of vocal training, liturgical understanding, and active participation in the Catholic Mass. The Music Coordinator reports to the Music Director and supports the director in all aspects. This role requires a strong servant leader with the ability to work creatively in a fast-paced environment, strengthening and upholding the Pastor’s vision and becoming an effective member of the Saint William staff. The coordinator should be committed to forming disciples in the Church while also pursuing personal and leadership growth, serving as a humble witness of faith and steward of personal gifts and parish resources to help build young disciples. As a collaborative team member, the coordinator will support the parish’s mission of leading people to heaven. The Music Coordinator is a part-time position with work requirements ranging from days, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements

  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, demonstrating a dedication to the liturgy and parish life.
  • Must possess and maintain a strong work ethic.
  • Degree in Music, Music Education, or equivalent experience in Children Choir/Youth conducting and vocal instruction.
  • Familiarity with the Roman Missal, liturgical seasons, and Catholic Church music documents (e.g., Musicam Sacram).
  • Strong organizational abilities, patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to inspire young people.
  • Proficient in English and Grammar.
  • Strong team working skills and able to multitask, while maintaining a positive disposition and serving in a Christ-focused manner.
  • Must pass all required background checks and child protection training prior to employment.
  • High School Diploma or GED acceptable to Texas Education Agency.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited American university or equivalent in a foreign country.
  • Two (2) years of related full time wage earning experience.
  • English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing).
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong piano/keyboard skills preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children/youth and young adults is highly preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish).
  • Spanish (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing). Preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct engaging weekly rehearsals.
  • Lead the children and youth choirs during assigned weekend liturgies and special celebrations.
  • Occasionally lead the adult choirs.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Music to schedule the choir to sing at designated weekend Masses, Holy Days of obligation, and other parish celebrations.
  • Choose age-appropriate and liturgically sound sacred music that aligns with the liturgical calendar and complies with the directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) regarding liturgical music.
  • Provide support to the Parish Music Director in all aspects of music and choir preparation, including weddings, funerals, and special events.
  • Instruct choristers on basic vocal production, sight-reading, and the foundations of Catholic sacred music (including Gregorian chant and hymns).
  • Integrate faith formation into choir practices by teaching children and youth about the Mass, the readings, and the meaning behind the songs they sing.
  • Identify and coach youth and adult cantors to lead psalms and other liturgical acclamations.
  • Assist the parish Music Director in selecting music for adult choirs, weddings, and funerals when necessary.
  • Work alongside and under the direction of the parish's Music Director, and in collaboration with the youth ministry coordinator to integrate the children/youth choirs into the broader parish community.
  • Provide musical support preparing the Children/Youth choirs to be part of special parish celebrations, such as First Holy Communions, Confirmation, Feast of Saint Cecilia, and Christmas/Sacred Triduum celebrations.
  • Serve as an accompanist or vocalist for parish funerals when necessary.
  • Actively communicate rehearsal schedules, liturgy details, and expectations to the parish Music Director, parents, and guardians.
  • Lead outreach efforts in the parish and religious education programs to build and maintain choir membership.
  • Manage choir folders, sheet music inventory, and uniform/robe distribution.
  • Ensure all rehearsals and activities strictly adhere to the VIRTUS / Safe Environment policies of the Diocese of Austin.
